💡 Trip Tips & Suggestions

✈️ Getting There

Denver (DEN) → London Heathrow (LHR): Direct flights available on United/British Airways (~9hrs). Book 3+ months ahead for best fares. Arrive Day 1 morning, hit the ground running by evening.

🚗 Transport Strategy

Days 1-2 (London): Use the Tube — no car needed. Days 3-9: Rent a car from Day 3 for Cotswolds→Burton→Manchester→Wales. Left-hand driving! Days 10-12 (Scotland): Consider train Edinburgh→Glasgow, car for Highlands. Important: Designate a driver or use taxis for brewery days. Many pubs are in walkable town centres.

🍺 Beer Ordering Tips

• Ask for a "half" if you want to try many — no shame in it
• "Cask" = served by handpump (cellar temp, lower carbonation) — the UK way
• "Keg" = cold, carbonated, familiar to Americans
• Try BOTH versions if available — same beer tastes completely different
• CAMRA pubs guarantee well-kept cask ale
• Tipping: not expected at bars (maybe round up), but appreciated

🏨 Where to Stay

• London (2 nights): Bermondsey/Southwark — walking distance to Beer Mile
• Cotswolds (1 night): Hook Norton village or Chipping Norton — true countryside
• Manchester (1 night): Northern Quarter — pub crawl territory
• Abergavenny (1 night): Stay AT the Skirrid Inn if you dare (it's haunted)
• Tenby (1 night): Harbour-view B&B — stunning walled town
• Snowdonia (1 night): Betws-y-Coed or Porthmadog
• Edinburgh (2 nights): Old Town or Tollcross (near Cloisters)
• Glasgow (1 night): Merchant City district

📅 Best Time to Visit

• May-June: Best weather, long daylight (sunset 9-10pm), beer gardens open
• August: Edinburgh Fringe + beer festivals, but very busy
• September-October: Autumn ales, harvest beers, "fresh hop" season, fewer tourists
• Avoid: January-February (cold, dark, some rural pubs reduced hours)

🎯 Don't-Miss Experiences

• Hook Norton steam engine: See a Victorian brewery STILL running on steam power
• Bermondsey Beer Mile (Saturday): 15+ taprooms in railway arches, walk between them
• Skirrid Inn at night: Stay overnight in the haunted rooms. Seriously.
• Ye Olde Trip cave rooms: Drink in caves carved into castle rock since 1189
• Fyne Ales farm: Highland scenery + world-class beer = perfection
• Traquair Bear Gates: Sealed until a Stuart king returns to the throne
• Cloudwater DIPA release day: Check social media for drops

💰 Budget Estimate (Per Day)

• Pints: £5-7 average (London £6-8, Scotland £5-6, Wales £4-6)
• Accommodation: £80-150/night (mix of B&Bs, boutique hotels, historic inns)
• Car rental: ~£40-60/day (Days 3-12)
• Brewery tours: £10-20 each (some free, book ahead for Hook Norton & Fuller's)
• Food: £30-50/day (pub lunches are excellent value, £12-18 for mains)
• Rough total: £150-250/day = ~$190-315 USD/day

🍻 Surprise Recommendations

• The Olde Swan (Ma Pardoe's): Most people have never heard of it. A time capsule. One of only 4 original homebrew pubs left. Dark Swan mild is heavenly.
• Barney's Beer at Summerhall: A 5-barrel nano hidden in an arts complex. Only locals know. Beer garden is Edinburgh's best secret.
• DEYA Brewing: Cheltenham doesn't scream "craft beer mecca" but DEYA's hazies rival anything from Vermont.
• Cromarty on the NC500: Scotland's famous coastal route — this converted dairy is the best pit stop imaginable.
• Buxton Yellow Belly: If you can find it on tap, drop everything. One of the world's most coveted stouts.
